My Recent Stay at Mahekal Beach Resort, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Opting out of the dreary San Francisco weather, warmer temps, bikinis and frozen tequila filled drinks were calling. Posted up on the Yucatan Peninsula's Caribbean shores, Playa Del Carmen was the call. Perched on the perfect stretch of white sand is the Mahekal Beach Resort.
Thatch hut palapas are tucked behind walls of fauna. All sitting in the midst of a perfectly manicured vibrant green property. Palm trees rule the grounds and strolls around give way to tropical jungle vibes, my favorite kind.

The ocean view bungalow is the ideal spot to hang in the hammock and let the sound of crashing waves rock you to sleep. The resort aims to provide a "unplugged" vacation aka no tv's...your time is better spent people watching on the busy beach anyway. Front row seats to tan, sleep, drink and be merry on the beach are provided by the hotel along with swaying beds that give really great naps.

If the beach gets stale (not sure that's possible), don't fret, Mahekal hosts three pools each with it's own personality. Each pool the perfect oasis to relax, swim and order lunch with a few mango margaritas!

Generally when traveling my time is spent out exploring, outside of resort lines. This trip turned out differently as I found it hard to peel myself from hanging around the resort. From ping pong and pool tables to pottery and painting there are plenty of ways to occupy time here. When cabin/resort fever kicked in there's no better cure than hopping on a bike and exploring the town. I spent my tour-de-Mexico mural hunting (that post here). The resort offers plenty of ways to busy yourself while still feeling the r&r. Between the fitness center, spa and daily yoga, mornings can start fairly early (I highly suggest catching sunrise). Overall the experience reigned in relaxation and the Mahekal succeed in a disconnected experience that had me returning to dismal SF feeling like a new person.
